Lightning Safety and Sports Event

The National Lightening Safety Institute (NLSI) says education is the single most important means to achieve lightning safety. Read below and learn the ISNP Sports Department protocol and expectations for when bad storms hit before or during a hosted outdoor sporting event.



Lightning- Wait a minimum of 30 minutes before continuing play or ending the contest (suspended match or match over).


Coaching Staff, Athletes, Parents, and Fans are Expected to Follow these Guidelines:
  • NO PLACE outside is safe when thunderstorms are in the area.

  • If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you.

  • When you hear thunder, immediately move to safe shelter: a substantial building with electricity or plumbing or an enclosed, metal-topped vehicle with windows up.

  • Stay in a safe shelter for at least 30 minutes after you hear the last sound of thunder.
